History

John P. Kraemer is credited with being the founding father of the Sussex Fire Department. Kraemer saw the need for a fire department and he helped form a club that was for civic betterment. It took a disastrous fire to truly bring the community together. The disaster was the January 30, 1922, burning of the 9-year-old four-room school.

The Sussex Fire Company was organized in May 1922. It was organized as the Lisbon Fire Company, as Sussex was not yet incorporated as a village.  Considerable importance was given to the formation of the company due to the burning of the school and it was felt that if the community had had an organized fire department, the school building might have been saved.
